2. Make your way to Glencar waterfall. Just over the border in Co Leitrim, this tiered, 50ft waterfall surrounded by woodlands is a breathtaking place to visit and featured in the WB Yeats poem ‘The Stolen Child’. A walking trail brings you to the waterfall and is a very accessible 0.3mile loop.
3. Discover Lissadell House and Gardens. Recently restored this historic house and Alpine Garden was the childhood home of one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising, Constance Markiewicz, and was also visited by WB Yeats on several occasions.
4. Explore court tombs, cairns and megalithic cemeteries. The archaeology of County Sligo is rich with stunning examples of the architecture of the past. The landscape surrounding Sligo town is strewn with many superb examples of cairns, court tombs and megalithic features which are well worth exploring.
5. Enjoy endless scenery. Above all else Sligo boasts striking and memorable scenery from the mountainscapes of Ben Bulben and Knocknarea to the silhouette of Classiebawn Castle at Mullaghmore. You could easily spend a day touring these scenic sites and savouring this remarkable county.
