The 4-star Westport Woods Hotel, Spa and Leisure Centre is located just a short walk from both Westport town centre and Westport quay. Backing on to the Westport House Estate it is surrounded by mature woodland and landscaped gardens. With its unique design and layout, it lends itself perfectly to escape and relaxation while also being convenient to all Westport has to offer.
Part of the Brian McEniff Family hotel group, the Westport Woods Hotel has long been renowned for hosting activity and themed breaks including dancing, walking, bridge, country music, gardening, whist and bowling.
There are several dining options at the Westport Woods Hotel including the airy and spacious Bench Café Bar for lunches and light snacks, and the Lakeview Restaurant where you can enjoy breakfast and dinner in a stylish setting.
As the focus has shifted to activities that allow social distancing and that prioritise the outdoors, we have put together a list of five ways to enjoy your time in Westport that allow you to stay safe while still enjoying a great day out.
1. Westport House and Estate - this historic house and restored gardens are such a pleasure to visit. Wander along paths past elegant water features, under ancient trees and wonder at the life once lived here.
2. Great Western Greenway - passing all the way from Westport Quay to Achill Island this is a fantastic amenity for walking or cycling. So much of the surrounding countryside and stunning scenery can be viewed from this easily accessible pathway.
3. Achill Island - there is so much to see and do on Achill Island without ever venturing indoors. Visit the poignant reminder of the island’s history at the Deserted Village; take a walk on one of Achill’s many spectacular Blue Flag beaches; drive along the Atlantic Drive to explore the less inhabited parts of the island with sweeping views all the way.
4. Westport town and quays – Westport town and Westport quays have it all with shopping, coffees and treats, history and heritage and much more. Though a bustling and vibrant hub, Westport still maintains the feel of a small, friendly market town.
5. Croagh Patrick, Murrisk Abbey and the National Famine Monument – whether you decide to climb to the top of the mountain or not this is still a hugely interesting site to visit. Ireland’s holy mountain looms above you and the haunting coffin-ship monument to the Great Famine lies in its shadow. The extensive ruins of the Augustinian Friary at Murrisk Abbey are just a short walk away and are also well worth exploring.
